Every radiator valve consists of two basic units. They are poppet valve and mechanical thermostatic valve. The valve reacts to the temperature surrounding it, changing the position of the valve head. This way the stream of water flowing through the radiator is properly adjusted.
A radiator valve consists of three main elements:
- The first, main part is the temperature sensor. The element is usually a small container with a medium (liquid, gas or solid) and a pin that gets longer or shorter, depending on the temperature.
- Other elements, equally important for proper functioning of the valve are valve lifter and handwheel. They allow to change the power of a radiator and reach the desired temperature.
Manufactures also offer thermostatic radiator valves with an external temperature sensor. It is connected with a lifter by means of a thin tube, called capillary tube.

A radiator valve simply regulates water stream, which is sent from boiler to the ending point of a heating installation - radiator. Keep in mind that a radiator valve does not regulate water temperature - it’s done by the boiler controllers.
When the room gets cold, the liquid inside the valve affects the coil, which causes the valve to open the water stream. As a result, the device gets warmer. When temperature of the room is adequate, the valve cuts the water off, causing the heater to cool off. In consequence, the room gets colder.
Each valve should contain clear and easy to read symbols on its surface. The lowest temperature is usually marked with a snowflake, and the highest - with a sun. Such symbols make it easier to find the desired temperature level.
One of the most important heating accessories is a bleeding valve. This small device is usually installed on the side of a radiator.
Why is this so important? If there is too much air in a heater, the device cannot work properly. It might result in underheated household. A bleeding valve helps to remove excessive gases from the installation, reducing the risk of malfunction.
